Background
Tom, a therapist at Balanced LLC, is a clinical professional counselor who has been practicing since 2019. He completed his BS in Psychology at Eureka College and his MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Bradley University. Since then, Tom has worked with children in a community mental health setting, as a staff counselor and director of a college campus counseling center, and in private practice.
Approach to Therapy
Tom takes an integrative approach to therapy that primarily blends techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and mindfulness practices. He also holds a worldview for therapy informed by feminist therapy and neuropsychology principles. His hope for all clients is to deepen their awareness of their thinking patterns, understanding of difficult emotions, and how these are held in the body.
Tom maintains membership with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), an international body that sets standards of care for transgender healthcare, as well as the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE). As a queer-identified person himself, he understands how important it can be for LGBTQI+ folks to work with a therapist who truly "gets it."
